Youth Education

Did you know that Aakwa Education does guest teachings for youth ages 5-18?

Ages 8-18

Students learn about the basics of plant anatomy and plant identification with worksheets, games, and outdoor plant activities. This course can be taught in one 2-hour session or over the course of two to three 2 hour sessions for the best knowledge retention.

Ages 5-16

Students learn about the basics of insect identification and what is classified as an insect or non-insect. There are two versions of this class: one meant for young children and the other meant for older children. Younger students will identify insects in a game called INSECT or NOT! and then explore the insects outside by catching and observing them in harmless deli cups. The version for older children includes a circle discussion where we list insects and non-insects and include Ojibwe teachings on insects. The older children will also get the opportunity to catch and observe insects outside, writing their observations like wildlife explorers.

Ages 10-18

In this course, students learn about the basics of plant domestication and how humans domesticated plants across the globe. It includes a worksheet, a game, and a creative recipe-building activity. It is best taught over two-three 2-hour long course periods.

Ages 10-16

This is a presentation, worksheet, and discussion combo best taught over a 90-minute to 2-hour class period. Students will learn about the pros and cons of regenerative agriculture vs. conventional agriculture. They will then get the chance to discuss amongst themselves and in a group about what they would choose if they were constructing a farm and why.

Payments and Rates

The standard rate for classroom visitation is sliding scale $50-100 per hour of teaching. (This rate accounts for hours of planning that go into each hour of teaching).
